48X update: Ambulatory Center enters exciting new construction phase

(SACRAMENTO)

If you’ve spent much time on the main campus, you may not be entirely used to the construction but it’s a reminder of exciting progress for many areas of the health system.

Last week, the 48X Complex literally started to take shape. Steel framing began and will continue over the next couple of months.

“People will be able to see the general form of the building take shape as this occurs,” says Creed Kampa, director for Facilities Planning and Development.

In the meantime, staff and patients can expect some detours. Last Friday, utility work started on 48th Street to dig a trench for a hydroponic pipe (represented in green portion of diagram below). The project will prevent southbound traffic from Y Street to 2nd Ave through the end of September.

Southbound traffic between X Street and Y Street will be limited to one lane, with exit only via Y Street. Northbound traffic between X Street and 2nd Avenue will be limited to one lane.

“We recognize the traffic delays due to this inconvenient but necessary work,” says Kampa.

The 48X Complex will be UC Davis Health’s new ambulatory surgery center, located at the corner of, you guessed it, 48th and X Streets. The four-story building will house 14 operating rooms, 59 pre- and post-operative recovery bays, 14 single occupant 23-hour recovery rooms, 96 clinical exam rooms, and 19 clinical treatment rooms. It is expected to open to patients in July 2025.

“When walls start going up, it all feels more real,” says Mike Condrin, chief operating officer, Ambulatory Care. “I’m thrilled we’re taking big steps toward a new chapter for ambulatory care, with the 48X construction progress. We can’t wait for completion, and in the meantime, I applaud our surgeons and clinical teams for their patience and grace. It will all be worth it!”
