Please note the following details of this change:

  • Staff and pedestrians traveling between Parking Structure 4 and the Hospital will be guided along the southside of X Street.

  • Staff and pedestrians traveling between Parking Structure 4 and the Cancer Center will be guided along the northside of X Street.

  • Staff and pedestrians traveling between the Cancer Center and the Hospital will be guided south on 45th street to the southside of X Street.

  • Signage will be provided around campus to direct staff and pedestrians.

  • The new canopy at the Main Traffic Circle will be opened for pedestrian use.

  • The drop off lanes under the canopy will not be open for vehicle and drop off use.

Please see the map below for full details on the closure and redirects.

A message from Jill Tomczyk, leader of the California Tower team and executive director of strategic programs, UC Davis Health Facilities Planning & Development:

“As the leader of the California Tower team, including many other projects within the strategic programs group, my first thought is “THANK YOU." I thank you all for being patient with us as we continue to have changing conditions with the California Tower project.

We are entering a new phase of construction for the Tower, and with that a large part of this effort means that we will need to close the sidewalk between the Emergency Department and the Cancer Center for the next few years. We know that this is frustrating, creating additional time and aggravation to get to and from your jobs. My team appreciates your patience as we complete the routing of new utilities that help support the Tower and begin the digging in the dirt portion of the project. As you can see below, the Tower is a massive undertaking, and it is top priority for my team to ensure that everyone can safely navigate around our construction, and we continue to support the operations of UC Davis Health.

While the sidewalk closure is just a small portion within the Tower project, my team understands that it is impactful to you all. In the spirit of providing unparalleled care across California, transforming lives and communities, we are incredibly excited to deliver this project to the Medical Center.

For awareness, I have provided some key timeframes below:

  • Major Construction/Site Clearing: June/July 2024

  • Mass Excavation (digging down in the dirt): Mid August 2024

  • Start of Structural Steel Erection: July 2025
