John Cook provides leadership and vision for the Information Technology (IT) department and oversees more than 550 employees who support UC Davis Health’s overall mission and strategy.
In his over 20 years at UC Davis Health, Cook has led significant technological advances, including the complete digital conversion from paper to Epic Health Records. Under Cook’s leadership, UC Davis Health has been consistently recognized as “Health Care’s Most Wired,” an award given to hospitals and health systems demonstrating excellence in IT implementation and innovation. Additionally, UC Davis Health has achieved the coveted HIMSS Level 7 designation, an award that places UC Davis Health in the top tier of hospitals nationally for the ability to leverage clinical technology to deliver the best in patient care.
Cook is a member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and a certified professional of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. He has worked in technology development and implementations for the past 30 years, starting his career as a system engineer installing computer-aided publishing systems at major metropolitan newspapers in the United States. He later became vice president with worldwide responsibilities in R&D, project management, and sales and marketing. Cook then began working in the health care industry as a general manager of a MedStat/Thomson-owned subsidiary, where he was responsible for all operations.
Cook earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from CSU Chico and a healthcare informatics certification from UC Davis.
