Dr. Jorge A. García is a Health Sciences clinical professor of Internal Medicine and the inaugural associate dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities at the UC Davis School of Medicine (SOM). He collaborates with faculty, students, trainees, and the administration to recruit learners and teachers from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds. As associate dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities, he works to promote safe and inclusive learning environments. Dr. García also leads efforts to promote equity and inclusion in medical education, and supports timely responses to emerging issues on behalf of all trainees.
Dr. García is a respected faculty member, clinician, and mentor, who has served our patients and learning communities since 1995. His multiple teaching awards, including the American College of Physicians Distinguished Teacher and Mentor Award, reflect his strong belief that serving the health needs of diverse and underserved communities starts with inspiring and nurturing lifelong learners from those communities. Dr. García shares and embodies SOM’s deep commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of education, science, and health care. He is grateful for the privilege and opportunities he has had to support, guide, and mentor pre-health students, medical students, resident physicians, and young faculty.
Dr. García is proud to be the son of nurturing and inspiring Mexican immigrants, a native Californian, and a first-generation high school and college graduate. He received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and he completed his residency training in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Highland General Hospital (Oakland, California).
In his free time, Dr. García enjoys cooking for his family, uncovering profound nuggets of U.S. history with his daughter, appreciating the art and artistry of legendary rock and blues guitarists with his son, and talking about race, health, social justice, and cultural humility with his wife, Dr. Jann L. Murray-García.
