Sean Muñoz, M.D., F.A.A.P., is the Interim Associate Dean for the Office of Student and Resident Diversity. Muñoz leads efforts to build a diverse and welcoming learning environment and culture. In this role, he attends to issues of intersectionality within and among students, fostering interprofessional collaborations between the School of Medicine, the Office of Medical Education and the School of Nursing.
Muñoz is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics. He is also an academic coach for medical students from California’s Central Valley participating in the REACH (Reimagining Education to Advance Central California Health) pathway. Previously, he was the Assistant Director of Scholarship for the Community Health Scholars program, mentoring more than 70 students on projects to address healthcare gaps in under-resourced California communities.
Muñoz’s research and academic interests focus on mentorship, recruitment, and retention of learners from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and geographically underserved communities. He is the recipient of a Kaiser Foundation Hospitals Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching and a Golden Apple Teaching Award from the UC Davis School of Medicine. Muñoz attended medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed his Pediatrics residency training at Rush University in Chicago. He also completed the CLASS fellowship in Academic Medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Clinically, Muñoz is a General Pediatrician at the Sacramento County Health Center, as part of the Comprehensive Integration of Resilience into Child Life Experiences (CIRCLE) Clinic, which provides comprehensive, trauma-informed care to support infants, children and adolescents in foster care.
