Dr. Ander is interested in understanding the gene expression response after brain injury. He studies the relationships between different types of RNA molecules and how we can use this knowledge to improve therapies and treatment. He also looks at how individual genetic variation can contribute to unique transcriptional responses of RNA.
Ribonucleic acids (RNA) are the intermediary between DNA and protein, and they are highly dynamic in response to disease or injury. The interplay between coding and non-coding transcripts ultimately regulates and gives rise to biological processes and functions that allow complex cellular systems to function. In the transition from normal to pathophysiological condition, the balance of these interactions can shift. As we learn more about how these interactions are regulated, we can also focus on developing molecular interventions that improve health.
Dr. Ander has studied gene expression in neurological, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders such as stroke, autism and Alzheimer’s disease incorporating the latest bioinformatics tools and techniques to analyze these and other disorders with his collaborators.
