DAISY Award—Ok-Ki Kim, M.S.N., R.N.
Operating Room
Ok-Ki Kim has come to the Davis 3 Operating Room (OR) on more than one occasion to provide assistance to the Davis 3 staff in complicated cases. This evening was another example where she exemplified compassion in patient care and exemplary professionalism in interdisciplinary interaction.
She came to our unit to assist with a c-section case that required the use of a cystoscope. The patient had a long labor experience, including pushing for almost five hours, that resulted in a c-section. After her son was born, she began to have frank red bleeding in her catheter. As the scrub, I required additional help in the Davis 3 OR with the set-up and use of the cystoscope. Ok-Ki came to our unit promptly and helped me assemble the cystoscope so that we could use it in a timely and proficient manner to reduce the patient's risk of converting from spinal to general anesthesia. She was kind, courteous, and provided her expert knowledge in a time-sensitive situation.
I nominated Ok-Ki for the Daisy Award in 2019 as well. She came to our unit on a night that I was in charge on Davis 3. We had a patient who delivered her third child during a seemingly uneventful vaginal delivery. The patient ultimately had a postpartum hemorrhage that required her to be transferred to the Davis 3 OR for further intervention. The dilation and curettage procedure rapidly converted to a cesarean-hysterectomy at which point the patient went into DIC (and ultimately had a Code Blue). Our surgeons required the help of a more skilled scrub RN. Again, Ok-Ki came to our unit promptly and demonstrated courage in working quickly in a unit/OR that she was unfamiliar with to provide prompt care to save the patient's life. I have no doubt in my mind that Ok-Ki's knowledge and skills helped our OBGYN's perform the cesarean hysterectomy as quickly and safely as possible. The patient was ultimately transferred to the ICU, required additional surgery, and ended her hospitalization in Tower 3 Women’s Pavilion. She was discharged with her newborn and was able to return safely home to her other children.
Ok-Ki is an asset to our hospital. I cannot express my gratitude for all the times she has come to the Davis 3 OR to improve patient outcomes and experiences.
