Shellyn Brown | Pediatric Infusion

Recognition: I nominate Shellyn Brown for a DAISY Award in recognition of the exceptional compassion, dedication, and advocacy she demonstrates every day.

She is a strong advocate for her patients, going above and beyond to ensure they receive the care and dignity they deserve. She is never afraid to speak up to better support her patients and families.

Shellyn has consistently cared for patients with highly complex emotional and psychosocial needs in the pediatric infusion room. With every interaction she shows patience and empathy. Shellyn takes the extra time needed to truly care for each child ensuring thoughtful, individualized care. Her ability to connect with patients who are scared or inconsolable makes an enormous difference for both children and their families.

One particularly meaningful example of her compassion involved a pediatric patient who had been fighting a long battle with cancer. As the child’s primary nurse in the pediatric infusion room, she learned that one of the patient’s last wishes was to ring the end of treatment bell. After a prolonged hospital stay, the patient was transitioning home on hospice and was no longer arousable. Prior to discharge, she and a coworker went to the main hospital to visit the patient and her family. She made sure to stop the NorCal transfer team so the patient’s family could ring the bell with their child, honoring that final wish despite the difficult circumstances. Shellyn had the patient's mother, father, and sister take E.H.'s hand and ring the bell three times. This act provided a powerful and meaningful moment for the family during an incredibly emotional time.

Her compassion, advocacy, and dedication embody the true spirit of nursing and leave a lasting impact on the patients, families, and coworkers around her. She is truly deserving of DAISY recognition.
