Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) at UC Davis Health is guided by the Advancing Research and Clinical Practice through Close Collaboration (ARCC) Model, a nationally recognized framework developed by Bernadette Melnyk and colleagues. The ARCC model provides an organizational roadmap for building and sustaining a culture of inquiry by aligning leadership support, infrastructure, mentorship, and organizational systems to advance evidence-based decision-making.
What is Evidence-Based Practice?
Evidence-Based Practice is a problem-solving approach that integrates the best research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences, values, and circumstances (Melnyk et al., 2016).
How We Support Evidence-Based Practice
The Center for Nursing Science leads this work by providing education, mentorship, consultation, and implementation support. These efforts help clinicians and leaders translate evidence into practice, inform policy and operational decisions, and improve outcomes for patients, families and communities.

Supported by an EBP Specialist, Clinical Nurse Scientists, Health System Librarians, and experienced EBP Mentors, participants receive practical guidance that extends beyond the classroom.

Consultations are available for practice, policy, quality, professional governance, and operational initiatives. For teams seeking to reduce unnecessary or low-value practices, support is also available for de-implementation efforts to help identify opportunities to streamline care, reduce waste, and sustain meaningful change.
The Center for Nursing Science offers a variety of educational opportunities designed to build EBP knowledge and skills across all levels of experience. Whether you are new to evidence-based practice or looking to deepen your expertise, educational offerings are available to support your professional growth and development.
Self-paced learning modules provide foundational knowledge in the EBP process and can be accessed at any time. Additional learning opportunities include focused classes, workshops, and presentations on topics such as asking clinical questions, conducting literature searches, critically appraising evidence, synthesizing findings, implementation science, outcome evaluation, and dissemination.
EBP education is integrated into several organizational programs, including New Graduate Nurse Residency and the Rising Nurse Leaders program. The Center for Nursing Science also partners with executive and operational leaders to provide targeted education on building a culture of inquiry and integrating evidence-based decision-making into daily operations, professional governance activities, and organizational priorities.
