Cancer Center Hematology Testing Lab

The Clinical Hematology and Coagulation Laboratory, located in the main hospital, operates 24/7 to support the Emergency Department, Inpatient units (including Operating Rooms), and Outpatient services. Selected hematology tests are also performed at the Cancer Center Laboratory located across the street from the Emergency Department.

Hematology Testing

The laboratory provides a comprehensive menu of routine and specialized hematologic testing. Cases exhibiting significant or unusual abnormalities are referred to a Pathologist for expert review and interpretation, with diagnostic reports submitted to the patient’s electronic medical record.

Routine Hematology Tests
  • CBC (with or without automated/manual differential)
  • Hemoglobin and Hematocrit
  • Platelet Count
  • Reticulocyte Count
  • Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
  • Body Fluid Analysis
Specialized Hematology Tests
  • Urine Eosinophil Count
  • Parasite Smears
  • Rapid Malaria Testing
  • Kleihauer-Betke Staining (fetal cells)
  • Hemoglobin Analysis (with/without interpretation; performed three times per week, during business hours)
  • Semen and Vasectomy Analysis: Performed by appointment only on limited days at the Cancer Center Lab

Coagulation Testing

The Routine Coagulation Menu includes:
  • PT/INR
  • aPTT
  • Fibrinogen
  • D-Dimer
  • Anti-Xa (for Unfractionated and Low Molecular Weight Heparin)
  • aPTT Inhibitor Screen
  • Fibrin Monomer
  • Thrombin Time
  • Antithrombin Activity
  • Thromboelastography (TEG) and TEG with Platelet Mapping
  • Platelet Function Testing (PFA-100)

 Special Coagulation Testing

The Special Coagulation Section, operating Monday–Friday during business hours, is the only laboratory in the Sacramento area providing the following advanced assays:
  • Factor VIII and IX Activity
  • Specific Factor Assays
  • von Willebrand Factor Activity (VWF:Ab) and Antigen
  • Inhibitor Assays (Bethesda Titer)
  • Thrombophilia Evaluation
  • Lupus Anticoagulant Testing
  • Platelet Aggregation Studies
Pathologist-reviewed interpretive reports are provided for:
  • von Willebrand Disease Workups
  • Thrombophilia Panels
  • Platelet Aggregation Studies
