Allergy and Immunology Fellowship
Scholarly Activity
All fellows must take the IRB-mandated Human Subjects Training (CITI). Fellows may submit either a research proposal or a CQI project proposal for evidence of their scholarly activity. An up-to-date extensive literature review is required on at least one topic related to the area of research interest, or fellows may write a review paper with a faculty member. This is expected to result in a publication as a review article, and the fellow will work with faculty to facilitate publication.
The research or CQI project itself is expected to result in a poster presentation, but an oral presentation in a research conference to peers and faculty is acceptable, and if applicable, a manuscript suitable for publication.
Fellows are also assigned intermittent journal articles to review with a faculty member to go through the peer review process.
Choosing a Scholarly Project
Fellows’ projects may be clinical, translational, or basic science research projects and they are encouraged to pursue research within the Division of Allergy and Immunology, from within the Department of Pediatrics, or from established, senior research investigators from other departments or in the university community.
The Department of Pediatrics may aid in statistical design and analysis of high-quality mentored research projects.
Timeline for Scholarly Project
Early in Year 1: Meet with Program Director to discuss research/academic interests.
Explore possible research mentors and projects.
Fall of Year 1: Identify research mentor and scholarly project
- Identify Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC) and present of proposed project to the SOC to ensure it will meet guidelines for scholarly activity
Spring of Year 1: Develop timeline to guide completion of project, along with outlining regular SOC meetings
Late Year 1 and Year 2: Data collection and analysis

- Provide the trainee with an appropriate background to establish a successful career in clinical allergy and immunology.
- Provide flexibility of rotation structure which allows trainees to pursue skills related to their career goals
- Expose the trainee to training in basic science and biomedical research, enabling them to understand the mechanisms of the origin of the allergic and immunologic diseases.
