Philosophy of Care

I am interested in providing comprehensive or holistic, trauma-informed, patient-centered, culturally-responsive psychiatric care to all my patients. This includes applying the so-called biopsychosocial model to understanding the person in his or her totality, including strengths, inner resources and resilience, beyond symptoms or problems. I have a strong foundation of supportive, psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, which I use in every encounter, regardless of whether a particular visit is formally labeled as a "therapy" or "medication management".

Clinical Interests

Dr. Sciolla is a general adult psychiatrist offering comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and treatment for a wide variety of mental disorders, such as traumatic stress, depressive, anxious, mood, and personality disorders, in addition to major psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He has a special interest and expertise in mental health issues of adult survivors of childhood traumatic and adverse experiences. In addition, Dr. Sciolla has an interest and expertise in providing culturally-responsive care to members of ethnic and cultural minorities, including those born outside the U.S., and individuals of diverse sexual orientation and gender expression.

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Sciolla's research has focused in the past on behavioral interventions to decrease risk behaviors for adult with histories of childhood maltreatment and adverse experiences. More recently, Dr. Sciolla's research has focused on building resilience and enhancing wellness on physicians across the practice continuum, i.e., from medical school to residency training and independent practice.
