Philosophy of Care

My clinical focus is on the care and oversight of laboratory rodents, particularly mice and rats, used in biomedical research. I support a broad range of studies, including those involving genetic modification, metabolism, surgery, vaccine development, and pharmacology. I have additional interests in pathogen biosecurity, infectious disease management in vivaria, and the use of animal models to inform special population pharmacology and translational medicine.

A central theme of my work is the application of pharmacogenetics to improve drug safety and efficacy. I investigate how genetic variation influences drug metabolism and response, particularly in opioids, with the goal of personalizing therapy for vulnerable populations. My human clinical research focuses on pediatric and burn patients, populations that often face heightened risks of adverse drug reactions due to complex physiology and developmental variation. By combining pharmacogenetic insights with translational models, I aim to optimize anesthetic and analgesic dosing regimens and advance precision medicine in critically ill and medically complex patients.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Grimsrud is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for research animals, with a focus on minimizing stress, reducing discomfort, and promoting overall well-being. Her clinical research is driven by a commitment to improving human patient care by advancing pharmacological understanding, particularly in the context of interindividual variability in drug metabolism and response. Through her work, she aims to enhance both animal welfare, translational research outcomes, and improve drug effiacy and pain management in human patient populations.

Research/Academic Interests

Kristin Grimsrud’s research focuses on improving drug dosing and safety in vulnerable populations through the integration of pharmacogenetics, translational models, and precision medicine. She studies how genetic variation influences anesthetic and analgesic drug metabolism, with a particular emphasis on pediatric and burn patients. Her work bridges preclinical rodent models and human clinical research to inform individualized treatment strategies and advance care in critical and complex medical settings.
