    Clinical Practice | Community Engagement

    Tobacco cessation using a 'whole health' approach

    The Healthy Living Clinic Initiative (HLCI) is a $7.5 million grant program awarded to the Prevention Policy and Practice Group (3PG) by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), California Tobacco Prevention Program to advance tobacco cessation using quality improvement methods and a "whole health" approach to serve at-risk populations in up to 40 community clinics statewide. HLCI is led by CHPR’s Desiree Backman, Jeffrey Hoch, and Neal Kohatsu.

    Clinical Practice | Population Health

    Helping health systems advance tobacco treatment

    CA Quits is an $8.6 million statewide initiative funded by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and led by internist Elisa Tong. Since 2018, CA Quits has worked with health systems and Medi-Cal to advance tobacco treatment through shared learning and population-health strategies that improve quality and equity.

    Policy Briefs

    Analyzing legislation for the California State Legislature

    We are a key contributor to the California Health Benefits Review Program. This program responds to requests from the California State Legislature to provide independent analysis of the medical, financial and public health impacts of proposed health insurance benefit mandates and repeals. The CHPR team has contributed medical effectiveness and public health impact analyses for over 15 years.

    Quality Indicators | Data Analysis

    Advancing digital transformation in healthcare

    The Electronic Clinical Quality Measures (eCQMs) Development and Maintenance for Eligible Clinicians project is a $3.8 million grant focusing on the development and implementation of quality reporting programs to improve clinical standards for clinicians participating in the Medicare program. The project is led by Patrick Romano, a professor of internal medicine, and funded by American Institutes for Research in the Behavioral Sciences and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

    Data Analysis

    Improving quality care in California nursing homes

    This $1.1 million initiative is led by Patrick Romano, a professor and healthcare quality expert, and sponsored by the California Hospital Assessment and Reporting Task Force. Our team leads data analysis for a website, Cal Long Term Care Compare (CLTCC), that gives California consumers useful information to compare nursing home quality.

    Utilizing evidence to leverage quality improvement

    Healthcare quality expert Patrick Romano leads this $1.3 million project funded by Mathematica Inc. The AHRQ Quality Indicators (QIs) Analysis and Support project aims to employ quality indicators—standardized, evidence-based measures of health care quality—to identify and improve patient care and clinical performance.

    Data Analysis

    Informed decision making through collaborative partnerships

    The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project led by Patrick Romano, a professor of internal medicine, is a $1.8 million grant funded by the National Opinion Research Center. This work will enable and simplify research ranging from policy issues to treatment outcomes through the collection and application of data at the national and state level.

    Population Health | Clinical Practice

    Improving tobacco treatments in priority populations

    This $1.1 million project is led by internist and cancer researcher Elisa Tong and funded by the UC Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program. The Improving Health Equity in Tobacco Treatment with a Population Health Management Strategy project addresses smoking related illness in marginalized communities through evidence-based treatments and culturally tailored programs.
