Addiction medicine is integrated into our entire residency curriculum. We used to do x-waiver trainings for the entire intern class. Since the waiver is no longer required, we have a general addiction medicine education session on buprenorphine during intern orientation. Every resident is expected to know how to diagnose and treat substance use disorders and be able to prescribe buprenorphine and other medications for addiction treatment.

Additionally, we have a two-week addiction medicine required rotation for the second-year residents. They rotate through multiple clinics with doctors who specialize in addiction medicine/buprenorphine prescribing.  Also included in this rotation is a half day a week with Dr. MK Orsulak on the mobile medical van/street medicine team and a day a week taking first call for the UC Davis inpatient addiction consult service.
