    ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

    Ekenechukwu Akabike, M.D., M.P.H.

Congratulations to Ekenechukwu “Ekene” Akabike, a third-year resident, for being honored by the Society of Hospital Medicine. Akabike won “Best Research” for a poster about advance care planning for Black older adults. The award was announced at the society’s local chapter’s inaugural poster symposium.

“I was quite pleasantly surprised to receive it since I wasn’t expecting an award. I had just come off an overnight shift to present my work and had only hoped to be coherent enough to give my poster its proper time to shine when it came time to present,” Akabike said. “So, I felt honored and grateful for the award and the opportunity to present my work.”

Her abstract is titled “Assessing readiness of black older adults to discuss advance care planning with their surrogates.” And it was also accepted for presentation last month at the 2024 NAPCRG Annual Meeting in Québec, a major gathering of primary care researchers.
