The 48X Complex, UC Davis Health’s large new outpatient surgery center located a few blocks from UC Davis Medical Center, is now fully open and operational after completing its final milestones of opening the third and fourth floor clinics this winter. The initial phase, including operating rooms, opened last July.

The third floor includes adult and pediatric Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Transplant and Colorectal Surgery clinics. The fourth floor brings Vascular, Wound Management, Urology and surgery clinics together – completing a multi-year rollout designed to unify key specialty services throughout the building and across UC Davis Health’s vast ambulatory care network.

As one of the nation’s largest outpatient surgery centers, 48X was designed as a one-stop-shop for same-day surgery patients.

Operating rooms running at full capacity

Since the 268,000-square-foot, $589 million facility’s first phase opened last summer, all 14 operating rooms are currently running at full capacity.

For example, 48X currently supports the entire spectrum of outpatient orthopedic sports medicine procedures — including complex knee ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement and hip arthroscopy — with plans for continued growth over coming years. Future-ready surgical suites are equipped to handle recent innovations, such as novel all-suture implants for meniscus root repair and ACL reconstruction; custom 3D-printed patient-specific osteotomy instrumentation; and robotic-assisted shoulder replacement surgery.

The center also significantly boosts capacity for outpatient spine surgeries in inland Northern California, including advanced techniques such as endoscopic, minimally invasive, robotic-assisted and augmented reality-guided procedures.

Increased imaging capacity, technology

48X also expands UC Davis Health’s imaging capabilities with a first-floor center offering MRI, CT, X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and mammography. This increased capacity enables tens of thousands of additional diagnostic exams each year, including advanced technology such as photon-counting CT.

The complex also adds four state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology procedure rooms, supporting thousands more minimally invasive treatments annually.

Calm environment, separate from trauma care

For surgical patients and their caregivers, 48X Complex offers a patient-centered experience with parking across the street, a centralized reception, and a predictable, routine environment. The location at the intersection of 48th and X streets is purposely several blocks from the main hospital and its busy level I trauma center.
