UC Davis researchers report that shunt surgery significantly lowers fall rates among older adults with normal pressure hydrocephalus. The study found that patients experienced improved mobility and balance following the procedure. These outcomes suggest that surgical intervention can help reduce fall-related injuries in this population.

After a fall from a ladder in early 2025, a baker from Northern California was left with a traumatic brain injury and a compressed spinal cord. She began her remarkable road to recovery at UC Davis Rehabilitation Hospital and was treated by Shane Stone, M.D., director of our Spinal Cord Injury Clinic and assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Carolynn Patten, Ph.D., PT, FAPTA, director of the UC Davis Biomechanics, Rehabilitation, and Integrative Neuroscience (BRaIN) Lab, is leading a study to understand the gait patterns of older adults in their natural environments. The study’s technology leverages computer vision and deep convolutional neural networks to perform 3D analysis.
