The newly opened temporal bone laboratory, operated by UC Davis Health’s Department of Otolaryngology, is equipped with advanced tools and technology to revolutionize otologic and skull base surgery education. This state-of-the-art facility, located in UC Davis’ innovation hub Aggie Square, allows residents and fellows to practice intricate procedures in a controlled environment.


UC Davis Health has successfully performed its first cochlear implant surgery with the patient awake. Doron Sagiv, M.D., associate clinical professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, led the procedure, which offers a promising alternative for older adults and medically complex patients who may not be ideal candidates for general anesthesia.
UC Davis Medical Center was the first hospital in Northern California to treat patients with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea using a newly FDA-approved Genio hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) system, which is the only such device clinically proven to work while patients sleep on their backs.
