Two-year-old Tobi loves to swim, climb, and ride his green tractor. You would never guess this active boy was diagnosed with spina bifida before birth. But for the past 30 months, he has been part of the CuRe clinical trial, the world’s first stem cell treatment for spina bifida delivered during fetal surgery at UC Davis Health. The CuRe Trial: Cellular Therapy for In Utero Repair of Myelomeningocele, is funded by the state’s stem cell agency, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and Shriners Children’s Northern California.
Disparities in cervical cancer outcomes persist among women of color, those with lower socioeconomic status, and by geography. Medically underserved women account for more than 60% of current cervical cancer diagnoses. A new UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center study called Healthy Cervix (HEALIX) proposes to reduce these cervical cancer disparities. This study will test new ways of encouraging and enabling women to undergo screening.
Researchers at UC Davis Health and UC San Francisco have identified a molecule known as Maternal Brain Hormone (CCN3) that increases bone density and strength. Their study, published in Nature, explains how women’s bones remain strong during breastfeeding despite calcium being stripped from bones to support milk production. The discovery has the potential to treat bone conditions like osteoporosis.
