The UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology has received a five-year, $3.6 million grant from the National Eye Institute to explore a new way to treat vision loss using gene therapy. The research could lead to safer and more effective treatments for serious eye diseases like macular degeneration and inherited blindness.
Can stem cells restore vision? In this new video, Susanna Park, M.D., Ph.D., describes a clinical trial that uses gene-agnostic stem cell therapy to help patients with retinitis pigmentosa. In early results, participants reported their vision loss had stopped progressing, and some even say they saw improvement. The study was published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology journal, Ophthalmology Science.
The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) has recognized Glenn Yiu, M.D., a professor of ophthalmology at UC Davis Health, with the 2024 Carl Camras Translational Research Award. The award is granted to investigators working in translational research that can lead to real-world results and improved human health. Yiu specializes in treating and researching diseases of the retina.
