EPIC team creates new process for high-risk patients, receives POP Award

(SACRAMENTO)

This month's Point of Pride (POP) Award was presented to UC Davis Health Patient Support Services Manager James Rice and EPIC Systems Analyst Tyrone Burks. The POP Award recognizes that every day, countless actions of empathy and kindness – large and small – take place across our health system.

James and Tyrone of the EPIC Grand Central Team developed improvements that help ensure patients with a suicide precaution order remain safe. Their proactive work identifies patients at higher risk and adds additional precautions to protect patients and employees, especially during transport.

On Tuesday, Director of Patient Support Services Marcus Christian, Associate Chief Operating Officer Kimmie Bleichner-Jones and Chief Experience Officer Jennifer Baron presented the POP Award to James and Tyrone.

The nomination reads:

"I am writing in hopes to recognize and honor James Rice and Tyrone Burks of the EPIC Grand Central Team. They are Heroes for their exceptional efforts in implementing EPIC enhancements that have significantly improved patient care in our organization. These gentlemen’s dedication and commitment to improving communication for all team members involved in caring for our High-Risk patient populations have not gone unnoticed.

"Their project involved implementing a new process for transport requests of patients with an active moderate-risk or high-risk suicide precaution order and has had a profound impact on patient safety and care. By incorporating the Transport with SDC/MHW or Handoff/Continuous Obs transport requirements, they successfully established an essential reminder for staff and clinicians to monitor for ligature risks during transport and at the destination location.

"This initiative ensures that patients are not left unattended, promoting their well-being and minimizing potential harm. Recently, they improved the process even further by updating the request screen and rover to indicate if a patient has a history of violence. This enhancement serves as a proactive measure to identify potential risks and ensure appropriate precautions are taken to ensure the safety of both patients and staff. By recognizing and addressing these gaps before any patient harm occurred, these gentlemen have demonstrated exceptional vigilance and dedication to patient care."

Congratulations to James and Tyrone on their POP Award!
