POP Award: Custodians credited in coma patient recovery
This month's Point of Pride (POP) Award was presented to UC Davis Health custodians Thomas Anderson and Ernest Johnson. The POP Award recognizes that every day, countless actions of empathy and kindness – large and small – take place across our health system.
This month's POP Award recipients managed to connect with a young patient in a coma. In fact, the patient's family credited their compassion as one of the main factors in his recovery! Thomas and Ernest lived UC Davis Health's patient promise and our values of kindness, trust and inclusion.
On Tuesday, Interim Chief Operating Officer Mike Condrin, Chief Experience Officer Jennifer Baron and Director of Environmental Sciences Amy Panoushek presented the POP Award to Thomas and Ernest.

In the nomination, the EVS supervisor wrote they happened to meet a patient's mother out in the community. When the woman learned they were a UC Davis Health employee, she broke into tears. She shared that her son had been admitted to the hospital after a serious brain injury. While he was in a coma, Thomas and Ernest spent time speaking to the patient. The patient's mother would see her son's feet move when his favorite subjects came up in dialogue.
"I sent them both Excellence Awards, but I don’t know if that does enough justice. I wanted to bring more visibility to what happened," said the nominator.
Congratulations to Thomas and Ernest on their POP Awards!
