(SACRAMENTO)

Capriel Fazzini, BSN, RN

A DAISY Award is part of The DAISY Foundation, an international program that recognizes nursing excellence. In memory of their son, Patrick, the Barnes family recalled the skillful and compassionate care Patrick received from his nurses during his eight-week hospitalization. They wanted to say “thank you” to nurses everywhere by establishing a recognition program – the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses – to honor the superhuman work nurses do every day at the bedside.

From Capriel’s nomination:

“We are so lucky to have Capriel Fazzini as our AN II, and I can't imagine a nurse leader more deserving of a Daisy Award. Capriel was on the floor prior to becoming management, which is evident in her leadership. She also left a lasting impression on many of our patients who still routinely ask about her. Capriel is a perfect example of professionalism, leadership, and emotional intelligence. She leads with patient safety and staff satisfaction at the forefront of her decision-making and conflict resolution. She consistently creates an environment that fosters trust, respect, and ethical behavior. She is supportive and encouraging in our professional development and motivates staff to be the best nurse they can be.

“I am so thankful to have a knowledgeable, supportive, and kind AN II and I am certain my colleagues agree. Capriel is an extraordinary nurse and absolutely deserves to be recognized for all she does here at the Cancer Center for patients and staff.”

From Jennifer’s nomination:

Christine Williams, Chief Nursing Executive, and Jennifer Sutherland, BSN, RN, CPN

“My cousin's grandson was airlifted from Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka in September due to an undiagnosed critical medical condition that ended up being a ruptured appendix. He currently is on Davis 7 Pediatrics Floor at UC Davis Medical Center after spending a month bouncing back and forth from multiple surgeries, ICU and Davis 7.  His primary nurse, Jenn Sutherland, RN, has been amazing and has gone above and beyond.  Per his parents, Jenn's communication skills are exceptional. ‘She sits down patiently to be sure we understand what is going on, all about his care from his procedures to medications to his IVs/TPNs, so we are not in the dark.’  Jenn goes out of her way to make sure he is comfortable and happy. She even plays with him to help build a therapeutic relationship and bond. Jenn does all this while she has been teaching a student nurse by her side. Two examples of going above and beyond worthy of a DAISY Award: Jenn looked for him after returning from a vacation. When Jenn found out he was in the ICU, she went up to the ICU and spent her lunch hour with his parents and him to catch up with them.  In addition, his parents have shared that Jenn has stopped by on her day off to visit. Per his parents, ‘We think for Jenn ... this is not a job; it is really a passion, and we know Jenn truly cares for her patients and families.’"

 Nomination #2

“Jenn is an exceptional nurse. She went above and beyond to meet the needs of my daughter and me! Our shower was broken, so she arranged for both of us to be able to shower in an empty care room. You have no idea how amazing that was after spending two nights here and facing more. Additionally, she explained and provided us with a meal voucher so my daughter could enjoy a meal. She has been so kind, caring and receptive. My daughter has received excellent care since being admitted, but Jenn is a ball of sunshine, which is really needed after days of feeling awful. Thanks so much, Jenn, for your amazing care of us ... it really is appreciated.”

Congratulations to our DAISY Award winners, Capriel and Jennifer!
