Fetal Care Nurse Melissa Barbato receives DAISY Award

Melissa Barbato, BS, RN, in the Fetal Care and Treatment Center, received the DAISY Award for the extraordinary compassion, empathy, and support she provided to a patient navigating a difficult and emotional experience. Melissa created a sense of safety and trust, taking the time to understand the patient's fears, answer countless questions, and offer steady reassurance. Her kindness extended well beyond clinical care: she checked in before the visit, helped coordinate insurance issues, and made sure every detail was clearly explained. When the patient arrived for her appointment, Melissa had helped her feel informed, supported, and cared for throughout her experience.

“Reason for Recognition: Melissa went above and beyond in every possible way. When I first got in touch with the Fetal Care and Treatment Center, I was so scared and overwhelmed with questions, I just wanted to do what was best for my baby girl, Autumn.

“Melissa took the time to truly understand me and our situation. She patiently walked me through the entire process, answered every question I had (and there were a lot!), and never once made me feel judged. She did, however, make me feel seen. She even coordinated with her team to assist with insurance questions and explained how everything should work, which meant the world to me, especially as this was my first pregnancy and my first time navigating insurance on my own.

“In the days leading up to my appointment, Melissa checked in a few times by phone, offering support, reassurance, and clear answers to every concern.

“When I arrived at the hospital, Melissa greeted us with a big, warm hug. She showed us where we’d be throughout our time there and made sure I had everything I needed to feel informed, supported, and as comfortable as possible during a difficult time.

“Melissa, if you see this, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You made one of the scariest and most heartbreaking experiences of my life feel a little less overwhelming, and I will always be grateful for the kindness, care, and compassion you showed us.”
