Meet the Principles of Community Showcase singers: Elizabeth Pha

In anticipation of UC Davis Health's Principles of Community Showcase next week, organizers invited this year’s performers to share what the Principles of Community mean to them. This week's interview is with Elizabeth Pha.

How do the Principles of Community resonate with you?

"Our greatest strength lies in our differences, which is why these principles resonate deeply with me. I believe that when we embrace diversity, we find the empathy needed to build a better community and tackle any challenges. The world is more beautiful and vibrant when we all come together to share our unique gifts."

What calls you to want to sing the National anthem, or perform for your colleagues?

"I believe our community finds its heart when we share what we love with one another. To me, music has always been that special bridge. It’s a language that everyone understands—one that ignores the boundaries of age or background and simply reminds us of our shared humanity."

Share one experience that recently brought you closer to the Principles of Community at work?

"My journey hasn’t been an easy one. As a war survivor, refugee, and immigrant, I spent years navigating a world that wasn't always ready to accept me, struggling against language barriers and the deep scars of racism—including the tragedy of the 1989 school shooting. 

"For a long time, I searched for a place where I felt I belonged. I finally found that sense of respect and recognition through music. Because music is a universal language, it lets me connect with people I might otherwise never reach, moving past our differences to find common ground. My greatest joy is using my voice to inspire people and bring a little more happiness into a world that truly needs it."

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

"I like to bake French macarons and give them away to the homeless community as an act of service to spread kindness and love."
