Dermatology’s Hair Loss Clinic now offers hair restoration services

The Department of Dermatology’s Hair Loss Clinic recently launched the region’s only comprehensive Hair Loss to Hair Restoration Program.

Procedural hair restoration services include platelet-rich plasma injections and hair transplantation. The procedures are currently being offered in a private practice setting once a week.

Oma Agbai, an associate clinical professor of dermatology, is the founding director of multicultural dermatology and hair restoration. She said the program is unique in the Sacramento Region because it bridges the gap between medical hair loss therapy and procedural hair restoration options.

“This allows patients to have a seamless continuum of care throughout their hair loss and restoration journey,” Agbai said. “Typically, patients have access to one or the other, but not both in a coordinated way as this program offers.”

According to Agbai, most hair restoration practices focus primarily on surgical procedures and do not typically offer comprehensive medical management of the full spectrum of hair loss disorders, including complex scarring alopecias. Conversely, clinics that specialize in medical hair loss treatment are less likely to offer the full range of procedural hair restoration options.

Patients in the Hair Loss to Hair Restoration Program are first evaluated in the hair loss clinic, where underlying causes of hair loss are addressed through medical and nutritional management. When appropriate, patients transition to procedural therapies including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), topical exosome therapy, and surgical hair transplantation using follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT).

“This program expands our ability to provide comprehensive care for patients with diverse hair types and complex hair loss conditions,” Agbai said. “Given its integrated and multidisciplinary approach, we hope this program will serve as an important resource for patients throughout the Sacramento Region seeking evidence-based solutions for hair loss.”
