Information Technology (IT) has made it faster and easier than ever for UC Davis Health staff to access Epic with the new Epic desktop icon.

When every second counts, even small improvements can make a meaningful difference. Earlier this year, IT deployed Epic desktop icons across UC Davis Health, giving users a quicker way to launch Epic while simplifying their daily workflows.

Faster access to Epic

Most Epic and integrated workflows can now be launched directly from the Epic icons, eliminating the need to first open Citrix. This streamlined experience reduces the number of steps required to access Epic and significantly improves launch times.

On average, Epic now opens in about six seconds using the desktop icon, compared to more than 25 seconds when launched from Citrix.

Across approximately 7,000 daily users, the difference in Epic launch times is now saving UC Davis Health an estimated 85-90 hours per day.

The impact extends beyond efficiency. By reducing the time spent launching applications, caregivers and clinicians can spend more time focused on what matters—providing exceptional care to patients.

Why is Citrix still available?

The Epic desktop icons are now the primary way to access Epic. Citrix is being maintained only to support remote access and for a small number of integrated applications that temporarily still require it.

The IT team is committed to continuously improving the Epic user experience at UC Davis Health. To learn more about the Epic desktop icons, visit the Epic Hyperdrive intranet page (must be onsite or connected to VPN to access).
