Grounds team takes sustainable approach to weed control

(SACRAMENTO)

The UC Davis Health Grounds team is rethinking how weeds are managed on the Sacramento campus – with sustainability, safety, and health at the center of their work.

In alignment with UC systemwide Integrated Pest Management (IPM) guidance, the department is shifting away from synthetic herbicides and toward piloting strategies that create healthier spaces for patients, families, staff, and visitors.

A new way forward

The Grounds team’s evolving approach includes:

  • Reducing the use of synthetic herbicides.
  • Hosting “Weed Parties,” where staff work together using hand tools like hula hoes, shovels, and rakes to clear invasive plants.
  • Applying bark mulch in planter beds to suppress weed growth.
  • Planting ground cover and other vegetation to naturally displace weeds.
  • Researching sustainable, safe alternatives to traditional chemical products.
  • Partnering with UC Davis campus experts to refine IPM strategies.

Putting people and the environment first

Erik Skall, Grounds Landscape Supervisor, said, “The Grounds Shop is proud to develop and implement a sustainable and effective weed control program that prioritizes the health and safety of the entire UC Davis Health community and environment through manual weed removal, bark installation, and the exploration of synthetic herbicide alternatives.”

The team’s efforts are also tied to the Integrated Pest Management Committee, which brings together stakeholders across UC Davis Health to ensure the campus environment supports safety, wellness, and sustainability.

By blending teamwork, research, and practical solutions, the Grounds department is leading the way toward a greener and healthier landscape for all who visit and work at UC Davis Health.
