Leadership Message: UC Davis Health launches integrated hand fellowship program

(SACRAMENTO)

Dear Colleagues,

The Combined Hand Service has launched its inaugural Integrated Hand Surgery Fellowship Program, marking a major milestone in collaborative surgical education and patient care.

The fellowship builds on the success of the Combined Hand Service, which brings together specialists from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex hand and upper-extremity conditions.

The new fellowship extends that same interdisciplinary approach to graduate medical education, offering advanced training that spans the full spectrum of hand surgery.

This academic year marks the first fellowship class trained through the fully integrated model, reflecting a shared commitment to preparing the next generation of hand surgeons while advancing UC Davis Health's missions of patient care, education and innovation.

We are proud to launch a fellowship that reflects the strength of collaboration across our two specialties. By bringing together expertise from orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery, we are creating a training environment that exposes fellows to diverse perspectives, surgical approaches and complex clinical cases. The result is a more comprehensive educational experience that prepares fellows for all aspects of modern hand surgery.

The fellowship offers exposure to a high volume of acute and elective cases across multiple clinical settings. Fellows work alongside faculty from both specialties, gaining experience in the multidisciplinary care models that have become a hallmark of the Combined Hand Service.

Our goal is to graduate surgeons with the experience, technical skills and clinical judgment to approach even the most challenging hand problems with confidence.

The program's inaugural fellows, Kelsey Millar, M.D., and Scott Douglas, M.D., began training last month. Millar completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at UC Davis Health, while Douglas completed residency training at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

The fellowship also matched Calvin Englert, M.D., this spring. Englert will join UC Davis Health in 2027 after completing his residency at Oregon Health & Science University. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Early recruiting success has generated excitement among faculty leaders, who believe the program is well positioned for continued growth.

“I believe this fellowship represents an important step forward for UC Davis Health and demonstrates what is possible when departments work together around a shared vision,” said R. Lor Randall, M.D., chair of orthopaedic surgery. “The Combined Hand Service has established a strong foundation for interdisciplinary care, and this fellowship builds on that success by creating new opportunities for education, mentorship and innovation.”

Leaders from both departments anticipate continued growth of the fellowship and hope to expand the program in the coming years. As the Combined Hand Service continues to evolve, the integrated fellowship is expected to strengthen UC Davis Health's position as a destination for advanced hand surgery training and coordinated specialty care.

This academic year marks the first fellowship class trained through the fully integrated model with Amelia Sorensen from orthopaedic surgery acting as fellowship director and Alfred Yoon from plastic surgery as associate fellowship director, reflecting a shared commitment to preparing the next generation of hand surgeons while advancing UC Davis Health's missions of patient care, education and innovation.
