Leadership Transition and Strategy Team Update

(SACRAMENTO)

UC Davis Health has made the difficult decision to eliminate the position of Chief Strategy Officer, effective July 1. Ron Amodeo has been serving in this position for the last 6 years, and we thank him for his many contributions to the organization. This was a difficult but necessary decision to help close a budget gap for the upcoming fiscal year.

“I want to sincerely thank Ron for his impact at UC Davis Health, encouraging us to think bigger and positioning us for the future,” said Interim CEO Mike Condrin.

Ron’s work at UC Davis Health has resulted in the creation of numerous new lines of business, an enterprise-wide clinical strategic plan, and building a solid Strategy team to drive business planning, plan new launches, and provide business intelligence.

In the coming weeks, Interim CEO Condrin will meet with Strategy team leaders regarding the details of their future reporting and continuing direction for the Strategy team.  No further budget cuts are planned for Strategy at this time and Ron will continue to work with colleagues at UC Davis Health through the month of June to ensure a smooth transition for work and his team’s responsibilities.

The financial reality of providing health care continues to be very challenging, with reduced reimbursements from payers (both government and commercial) while facing greatly increasing costs for wages and supplies.  Last week, the California Hospital Association noted that almost half of all California hospitals are losing money each month.  At UC Davis Health, the budget year concluding this month has been challenging, with performance significantly under budget for the year.  In order to balance the budget for the coming fiscal year, some difficult reductions are being made to bring expenses into alignment with expected revenues.
