Medical volunteers needed for youth heart screening on March 9

(SACRAMENTO)

Medical and general volunteers are needed at the free youth heart screening event scheduled for Sunday, March 9. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Harper Junior High School, 4000 E. Covell Blvd., Davis. Shifts vary from two to four hours depending on the volunteer’s role.

Inside of a medical tent, a boy lies on a table while a female volunteer puts probes on his chest. A man sits with a laptop at a table.
One participant receives a heart screening within a medical tent.

The screening is hosted by the Kyle J. Taylor Foundation, in collaboration with UC Davis Health and Project ADAM Sacramento. The screening is open to anyone ages 12-25 at no cost. Those interested can register for a heart screening.

The screening includes a cardiac risk assessment, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and physician review. The foundation will provide the ECGs and equipment for screening the community, with assistance from UC Davis Health medical volunteers.

The event aims to prevent sudden cardiac arrest risk in children and young adults. Annual physical examinations and sports pre-participation physical exams can miss about 85 to 90% of issues that can cause sudden cardiac arrest in youth.

Medical volunteers will:

  • Take vitals and review family history
  • Perform ECGs and ECHOs
  • Demonstrate hands-only CPR
  • Physician volunteers will review ECG results

General volunteers will:

  • Assist with set up/take down
  • Check in and check out participants
  • Greet the public and keep people moving through

Register to volunteer.
