Medical volunteers needed for youth heart screening on Nov. 2

(SACRAMENTO)

Medical and general volunteers are needed at a free youth heart screening event on Sunday, Nov. 2. The screening runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Monterey Trail High School, 8661 Power Inn Road, Elk Grove. A morning shift and an afternoon shift are available: from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers are also needed for full-day shifts.

The screening is hosted by the Kyle J. Taylor Foundation in collaboration with UC Davis Health and Project ADAM Sacramento. The screening is open to anyone ages 12-25 at no cost. Those interested can register for a heart screening.

The screening includes a cardiac risk assessment, an electrocardiogram (EKG) and physician review. The foundation will provide the equipment such as the EKGs and UC Davis Health provides the medical volunteers.

The purpose of the screening is to help prevent sudden cardiac arrest risk in children and young adults, which can occur during sporting events. Annual physical examinations and sports pre-participation physical exams, which are required for sports participation, can miss about 85 to 90% of issues that can cause sudden cardiac arrest in youth.

General volunteers will:

  • Assist with set up and take down
  • Check in and check out participants
  • Greet the public and help people move through the different stations

Medical volunteers will:

  • Take vitals and review family history
  • Perform EKGs and ECHOs
  • Demonstrate hands-only CPR

In addition, physician volunteers will review ECG results with participants.

Register to volunteer.
