Meet the Principles of Community Showcase singers: Citlalli Velazquez
In anticipation of UC Davis Health's Principles of Community Showcase on March 3, organizers invited this year’s performers to share what the Principles of Community mean to them. This week's interview is with Citlalli Velazquez.
How do the Principles of Community resonate with you?
"I am a second-generation child of immigrants, and I really resonated with Principles of Community. Growing up, I was always looking for spaces where I felt welcomed and accepted. They were a lot harder to come by back then. So I really appreciate the inclusivity UC Davis is striving for and the effort to create a safe and welcoming environment. It means a lot to be part of a community that values people for who they are."
What calls you to want to sing the National Anthem, or perform for your colleagues?
"My sister is a UC Davis Health employee, and she likes to call herself my biggest fan. When she found out about this opportunity, she signed me up! I didn’t really have much of a choice, but I decided to take the opportunity because I thought it was a great opportunity to show why representation is important. Growing up, I didn’t see many singers or performers who looked like me or shared similar experiences. By performing, I hope to inspire others like me to go after their dreams and do things that scare them."
Share one experience that recently brought you closer to the Principles of Community.
"I recently landed my first lead role in Amélie at American River College. Theatre is often a predominantly white space, so I was really amazed by how diverse the cast was. Being surrounded by so much support and encouragement made me feel like I truly belonged, and it reminded me how important inclusive spaces are."
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
"People are often surprised to learn that I’m actually a very shy person. Singing and performing allow me to step outside of my comfort zone, and people are usually shocked that someone so quiet can get up on stage and sing."

Thank you Citlalli Velazquez for volunteering to sing at Principles of Community Showcase and for sharing your insights!
Are you interested in volunteering?
The event committee is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help make it a welcoming, inspiring space for everyone who attends. On March 1 and March 2, volunteers will help decorate and setup the event—the behind-the-scenes work that transforms a venue into a vibrant reflection of community, creativity, and shared values. Volunteer roles include decorating, set up, and various other tasks to help ensure the venue is organized and ready for guests. Flexible shifts are available, and all volunteers will receive guidance and support on site. If you’re interested in volunteering, please sign up through this link.
