Philosophy of Care

Dr. Wilkes is never rushed or too busy to return calls or check in on patients. He takes the time to listen carefully and explain issues clearly so that patients can decide for themselves and direct their own care. He is culturally respectful, and up to date.

Clinical Interests

Michael Wilkes is widely known for his efforts to introduce medical students to the humanistic side of being a physician, and for working tirelessly to include the public health and social sciences as part of training physicians. He is an award winning teacher who has lead the way toward enormous changes in medical education at UC Davis including UC Davis' "Doctoring" curriculum - a series of seminars through all 4 years of medical school that focus on evidence-based clinical care, communication skills, clinical reasoning and population health. In his current capacity as Director of Global Health he works locally with the UC Davis Vet and Nursing faculty and with medical and health sciences schools around the world as they seek to train the most capable health providers to address local health needs. He serves as a reviewer for many medical publications. He is the Director of Adolescent Health Services at WIND Youth Center, an affiliate of One Community Health and UC Davis.

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Wilkes' research interests include how to best train tomorrow's doctors. He is also a leader in using eLearning (on-line learning) to help assure that students and practicing doctors are up to date with modern clinical practices. He is also highly sought after around the world to help design or improve medical and health science schools. His current research focuses on identifying emerging or re-emerging One Health infections and exposures in rural communities in Africa and Asia. Dr. Wilkes is also an award winning journalist.
