Diabetes and endocrinology programs listed among top in the nation

Becker’s Hospital Review names UC Davis Health among 36 best for patient care

UC Davis Health is one of 36 hospitals and health systems in the United States honored by Becker's Hospital Review in its first edition of “hospitals and health systems with great diabetes and endocrinology programs.”

UC Davis Health was the only organization in Northern California to be included on the list, and one of just three in California.

Becker’s lauded the hospitals and health systems for their dedication to improving patients’ endocrine health. It stated that each honoree has implemented programs, initiatives and service lines that enhance the quality of life for their patients, who have disorders ranging from diabetes to thyroid issues to metabolic disorders and more.

“We are honored to be recognized nationally among Becker’s great diabetes and endocrinology programs,” said Joaquin Lado, chief of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at UC Davis Health. “This recognition is a reflection of our care team members, who strive to provide patient-centered care daily while advancing research and discovery within the field.

This is the division’s second national accolade in a short period of time: For 2023-24, the UC Davis Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism was ranked as the No. 33 diabetes and endocrinology program by U.S. News & World Report.

Among the division’s recent accomplishments are the establishment of a new endocrine XY clinic for children with X and Y chromosome variations and a new endocrine cardiometabolic clinic. The division also has a dedicated transplant endocrinology clinic, which is a one-stop shop for the complex, specialized care often needed by organ transplant patients. UC Davis Medical Center is one of the few hospitals nationwide with such a clinic.

The division’s inpatient glycemic team, a specialized diabetes program, has seen significant improvements in patient outcomes, including lower rates of hyper- and hypoglycemia. The team recently implemented an insulin infusion calculator software to improve patient safety and comply with regulatory requirements.

Becker’s Hospital Review is one of the country’s top publications for health care news and analysis. To compile the list of “great diabetes and endocrinology programs,” the Becker’s editorial team accepted nominations and performed research.
