Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship
Program Mission:
The mission of the UC Davis Health Clinical Neurophysiology program is to produce clinical neurophysiologists that are expert in clinical assessment, electrophysiologic testing, and management of neurologic conditions in a diverse patient population.
Our program is committed to the following aims:
- Train experts in the performance and interpretation of basic and highly complex neurophysiologic testing.
- Graduates will be able to perform and accurately interpret neurophysiologic testing.
- Provide high-quality specialty care to a diverse population with a broad range of neuromuscular disorders and epilepsy.
- Train academic faculty to provide patient care and perform high-quality research.
This fellowship is a one-year program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Candidates must be board eligible or board certified in neurology.
This fellowship provides the opportunity for training and experience in the following areas:
- Performing and interpreting electroencephalograms (EEG)
- Performing and interpreting evoked potential studies (median nerve, posterior tibial nerve, auditory and visual)
- Intensive 24-hour video EEG monitoring
- 24-hour ambulatory monitoring
- Reading diagnostic nocturnal polysomnograms and multiple sleep latency tests in the UC Davis Medical Center Sleep Disorders Laboratory
- Performing and interpreting electromyographs (EMG) and nerve conduction studies
The UC Davis Medical Center Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory and the Sleep Disorders Laboratory are fully accredited by the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and the American Sleep Disorders Association, respectively. EMG training, neuromuscular disorders and sleep disorders facilities are also provided at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Sacramento (Mather VA) and the Northern California Shriners Hospital. Pediatric EMG is performed under the supervision of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Words from the Fellowship Director (Clinical Neurophysiology EMG track)
Welcome to our page. My name is Ge Xiong and I am the director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship program at UC Davis.
Our fellowship has strong faculty team who are passionate about teaching and the practice of clinical neurophysiology. For EMG track, we have a wealth of clinical and research interests with new areas of neuropathies and ultrasonography of the peripheral nervous system, which add to our traditional interest in disorders of neuromuscular transmission.
The primary goal of our program is the education of our fellows while providing excellent care to our patients. We accomplish that, first by providing a very robust schedule of lectures and conferences, and second by maximizing the time that our fellows spend in the EMG laboratory without call responsibilities.
Another innovation of our fellowship is the exposure of our fellows to SFEMG, ultrasonography and multiple options of elective rotations with a broad spectrum of procedure practice including EEG reading, evoked potentials, botox injections.
We feel indeed very fortunate to be part of a very successful department in a very strong branch of the University of California, and appreciative of practicing neuromuscular medicine in a beautiful area of the country in the Capital of the state of California.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me directly by my email provided through our Fellowship Coordinator.
This fellowship is a one-year program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Candidates must be board eligible or board certified in neurology or child neurology.
This fellowship provides the opportunity for training and experience in the following areas:
- Performing and interpreting electromyographs (EMG) and nerve conduction studies
- Single fiber EMG
- Neuromuscular ultrasound
- Reviewing muscles and nerve biopsies
- Performing and interpreting electroencephalograms (EEG)
- Performing and interpreting evoked potential studies (somatosensory, auditory and visual)
- Intensive 24-hour video EEG monitoring
- 24-hour ambulatory EEG monitoring
- Reading diagnostic nocturnal polysomnograms and the multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) in the UC Davis Medical Center Sleep Disorders Laboratory
The UC Davis EMG lab is accredited by the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic medicine (AANEM). The UC Davis Medical Center Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory and the Sleep Disorders Laboratory are fully accredited by the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and the American Sleep Disorders Association, respectively.
Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the evaluation of adult and pediatric patients with seizure disorders, including the epilepsy clinic, review of EEG video recordings and the presurgical work-up of patients with medically refractory seizures. There will also be opportunities to attend epilepsy surgical procedures requiring intra-operative monitoring.
EMG Fellows will be able to participate in the evaluation and care of a diverse population of neuromuscular patients. Multidisciplinary and subspecialty clinics that include: myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy association (MDA), ALS, and neuromuscular clinics. In addition, there are opportunities for clinical and translational research in the areas of myasthenia gravis (MG) and congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMS).

The combined EEG/EMG fellowship will prepare fellows for the Added Qualifications in Clinical Neurophysiology examination of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
We offer two one-year fellowship programs in Clinical Neurophysiology, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Qualified candidates will hold an M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution, will have completed a residency in Neurology or Child Neurology, and must possess a license from the Medical Board of California or apply for one at least 4 months in advance. Foreign medical graduates will be considered if they have completed a U.S.-based residency program.
To Apply
To apply for CNP-EEG Track:
ERAS is used for the Specialties Matching Service (Fellowships). All applications are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) is used for ranking and matching. Interviews will be conducted through the months of November through January.
To apply for CNP-EMG Track:
In addition to completing the online Fellowship Application, qualified applicants must submit three letters of recommendation, Curriculum Vitae, and Letter of Intent to the Fellowship Coordinator.
