Fellowships in Pain Medicine

The UC Davis Division of Pain Medicine Fellowship Program comprehensively trains participants in appropriate applications of traditional and novel analgesics and state-of-the-art interventional procedures. Our training mission is to help future leaders in pain medicine attain advanced knowledge and skills in managing patients in pain while participating in a stimulating research environment. UC Davis offers exceptionally varied clinical experiences in pain management. Our patient population ranges from children to adults, inpatients as well as outpatients, and encompasses patients with acute postoperative, chronic cancer and nonmalignant pain.

Fellows in the program develop competency in pain assessment and diagnosis, development of treatment plans, and coordination of pain management strategies with disease management and palliative care. We cultivate a multidisciplinary pain management environment in which fellows and staff clinicians from numerous specialties work together. That diverse community of clinicians includes specialists in anesthesia, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, psychiatry, and other fields through which they are eligible for certification in pain medicine through the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Fellows are exposed to the full range of pain treatments from interventional to medical, benign to cancer, and from a medical model to behavioral rehabilitation. The broad range of interventional procedures performed at UC Davis includes neurolytic techniques and implantation of spinal pumps, stimulators and other devices. Training experiences are substantially integrated with didactic and interactive teaching sessions focused toward understanding basic foundations of pain management. Additional off-site experiences are offered to supplement the fellows’ experiences, including participation in a national cadaver course on implantable devices.

The UC Davis Division of Pain Medicine Fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and uses the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for our August start fellowship positions.
