As a center of excellence, the Division of Pain Medicine at UC Davis has attained more than 40 years of dedicated excellence in the field of pain management. We continue to build and expand upon this success. The guiding principles of empathy, compassion and community drive our efforts to provide dedicated, thoughtful care to the residents of the greater Sacramento region and beyond. We specialize in whole-person, customized patient care, with meticulous attention to detail. That commitment forms the cultural foundation of the Division of Pain Medicine.
The Division of Pain Medicine and its faculty have edited and authored innumerable medical profession texts that have influenced and shaped medical care policy and practices nationally. Themes such as responsible opioid prescribing, opioid-sparing pain care techniques, and the art of communication as it relates to people afflicted with chronic pain are among the many topics authored. Moreover, the UC Davis Division of Pain Medicine has contributed substantively to the editing of Bonica’s Management of Pain, the foremost authoritative international textbook on pain management. Our faculty have updated and written textbooks and book chapters pertaining to neuromodulation and other hyperspecialized fields.
Our “Train the Trainer” program is a unique and novel solution to developing pain education for primary care physicians and has been described as a model for pain medicine education. Further, the Division of Pain Medicine is directly tied to the Center for Advancing Pain Relief (CAPR), which supports broad multidisciplinary research across the university, fostering a profundity of thought related to pain medicine.
We welcome all learners and have taught undergraduates, medical students, nursing students and physician assistants as well as medical residents and fellows. We likewise encourage scholars and practitioners who are interested in reimagining how pain care can be delivered more effectively and inventively and with even greater empathy to work with the UC Davis Division of Pain Medicine team to see how they can incorporate our best practices into their work.
