Cytopathology
Cytopathology is the study of individual cells to detect disease. While it is mostly used to diagnose cancer and screen for precancerous conditions, it also plays a vital role in identifying infectious diseases and other pathological processes.
The UC Davis Cytopathology Department is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), participates in the CAP proficiency testing program, and fully complies with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA 88).
The Cytopathology Department at UC Davis provides comprehensive cytologic support, including, but not limited to, rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of fine needle aspiration (FNA), and core needle biopsy (CNB) specimens. UC Davis Health System team of Cytologists and Cytopathologists offer expert consultation on the full spectrum of cytologic preparations, including FNA biopsies, non-gynecologic specimens, and gynecologic Pap smears.
The missions of the UC Davis Cytopathology Laboratory are to:
- Deliver the highest quality cytologic diagnostic services to our patients and clinical partners in a timely and accurate manner.
- Provide comprehensive, high-quality education in all areas of cytopathology to trainees at every level.
- Advance the field through the development and implementation of innovative technologies.
- Actively participate in regional and national initiatives aimed at improving health services for diverse community populations.
Cytologic Specimen Collection and Submission Guidelines
Please refer to the Cytologic Specimen Collection and Submission Guidelines for comprehensive instructions on requesting fine-needle aspiration (FNA), as well as the proper procedures for specimen collection and submission for cytologic screening, including the following:
- Gynecologic Samples (Pap Test)
- Non-Gynecologic Samples
General Information
- Lab Slip and Clinical History:
Every specimen must be accompanied by an appropriate lab request form including relevant clinical history. - Multiple Tests:
If multiple tests are required, a separate specimen should be obtained for cytology whenever possible. Each specimen must have its own request form. - Delivery Location:
Deliver all specimens to the Specimen and Report Center (SARC), Room 2008. - Reporting Timeline:
- Non-GYN or fresh specimens received by 2 p.m. will be reported by 4 p.m. the next working day unless special procedures are requested or required.
- Slide Review:
Slides can be reviewed with cytology staff by appointment between 3–4 p.m., in Pathology Building, Room 0106 by the pathologist or cytology fellow - Phone Inquiries:
Limit phone requests for reports, as they delay chart documentation. If necessary, contact the department supervisor at 916-734-7531. - Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA) Requests:
- Request on-site assessment - Fine-needle aspiration biopsies of deep visceral or non-palpable masses
- Deep or non-palpable masses are sampled under image guidance, such as CT, ultrasound, or fluoroscopy, and are scheduled through the Department of Radiology. The FNA service should be notified so that Cytology staff can be present to prepare the smears and assess the adequacy of the aspirated material. During regular laboratory operating hours, please call (916) 734-3031. Outside of regular operating hours, please contact the AP Pathologist or Resident on call by contacting the hospital operator.
- Scheduling for a pathologist to perform the FNA
- Outpatients: FNAs are performed at the Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Clinic, located on the 2nd floor of the UC Davis Cancer Center. The clinic operates on Monday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m..
- Existing Cancer Center Patients: Appointments are scheduled by a Patient Services Representative after an order is placed by the patient’s physician.
- New Patients: Appointments are scheduled by the New Patient Referral Service following receipt of a referral.
- Emergency Department and Inpatients: The FNA Consultation Service may be available to perform needle aspiration biopsies at the patient's location on an as-available basis.
