Philosophy of Care

Dr. Stein-Wexler believes in providing the best possible quality of care to children in need of imaging. She tries to image appropriately, employing principles of ALARA (using as little radiation as is needed) to answer clinical questions. She also strives to make children and their family members comfortable in what can be a bewildering environment. As Chief of the Pediatric Radiology section, she leads a group of highly skilled radiologists, who together provide outstanding care for children throughout the UC Davis healthcare system.

Medical student education and resident education are also tremendously important to her. The constant questioning and teaching that take place at an academic center often enhance clinical care. Furthermore, our ability to continue to provide high quality care ultimately depends on educating future generations of practitioners.

Dr. Stein-Wexler's commitment to education has led her to edit two major texts in pediatric radiology, one on orthopedic imaging, the other a general pediatric radiology casebook. With these texts, she hopes to help educate many more people than she will ever encounter in person.

Clinical Interests

In addition to general pediatric radiology, Dr. Stein-Wexler has a strong interest in international education outreach in radiology. For the past eight years, she has helped educate radiology residents in a new residency in Haiti.

She has traveled there many times, often accompanied by UC Davis radiology residents, faculty, and alumni. She also organizes observerships for senior Haitian radiology residents at UC Davis, providing them with an opportunity to focus in a single area of interest. She finds this outreach to be tremendously rewarding and hopes to inspire others to make global outreach part of their careers. She has taught in other countries as well, most recently Nepal, and is developing a partnership between several radiology residencies there and UC Davis.

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Stein-Wexler's current research interest focus predominantly on radiology education in resource limited settings. In the past, much of her work focused on Intussusception Reduction, where she mentored a group of bioengineering undergraduate students at UCD, helping them develop a device that simulates reducing intussuceptions. She has also conducted research in the field of radiation dose reduction.

In addition, she has edited two major radiology texts: Stein-Wexler R, Wootton-Gorges SL, Ozonoff MB. Pediatric Orthopedic Imaging (Springer publishers 2015) and Top 3 Differential Diagnoses in Pediatric Radiology (Thieme publishers 2019), a resident-focused pediatric radiology review book. She is co-editor of an on-line platform that publishes ultrasound cases that are particularly relevant to resource-limited locations.
