Synthesis Tables for Use at UC Davis Health

Synthesis tables offer a method for organizing and communicating the existing body of evidence to stakeholders. They organize interventions and outcomes in a way that highlights the most effective strategies for driving meaningful improvements (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023). Building on our collaborative efforts with the Fuld Institute at The Ohio State University and Dr. Lynn Gallagher-Ford, we advocate the use of synthesis tables as an integral part of the EBP process. Clinicians across various disciplines at UC Davis Health have developed synthesis tables to synthesize evidence based on a PICO question and to provide evidence-based recommendations. The Center for Nursing Science has compiled a number of synthesis tables and made them available for staff to support evidence implementation and similar clinical inquiries.

Synthesis Table Attachments in Clinical Policies

At UC Davis Health, clinical policies and procedures are grounded in the latest evidence, with references and relevant clinical skills updated during each review. To enhance the integration of evidence-based practices, synthesis tables have been included as attachments in several policies and procedures. The goal is to expand the number of policies and procedures featuring evidence-based synthesis tables to further inform clinical practice.
