ECLS for the Bedside PICU Nurse

This course is designed specifically for bedside nurses caring for pediatric patients receiving Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS). While ECLS specialists manage the ECLS circuit, bedside nurses play a critical role in the monitoring, assessment, and care of patients supported by this therapy. The course provides foundational knowledge of ECLS, including indications, patient selection, modes of support, and cannulation, while emphasizing the bedside nurse’s responsibilities during cannulation, ongoing patient management, recognition of patient status changes, anticoagulation considerations, ventilator management, skin care, and ECLS emergencies.

Participants will also learn about ECLS weaning, bridging strategies, decannulation, and post-decannulation care. Through case-based discussion and hands-on learning, nurses will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to provide safe, effective care for patients receiving ECLS.

This class is only open to UC Davis Health PICU/PCICU RNs, Children's Hospital Critical Care Transport Team, and PCR Pediatric Critical Care RNs.

Continuing Education Contact Hours
