Course description

The science and clinical application of mechanical ventilation is broad and complicated. Through lecture, discussion, and hands-on simulation, this course will present current concepts of mechanical ventilation, including ventilator modes and settings, potential hazards, and alternative modes of ventilation. Types of respiratory failure and their management using mechanical ventilation will be discussed. Standards of caring for patients on ventilators and having artificial airways will be reviewed. Furthermore, weaning and liberation from mechanical ventilation be reviewed. Practice assessing and managing patients on mechanical ventilation will be provided using scenarios and a human patient simulator.

Target audience

This course is intended for critical care nurses who work with mechanically ventilated patients on a daily basis. This course is restricted to critical care nurses working in MSICU Blue, MSICU Gold, MICU, SICU, CTICU, NSICU, Burn ICU, PACU, PCR ICU RNs and ED RNs who care for ICU patients.

Attire

Please dress in hospital scrubs or clinical work attire and bring a stethoscope as participants will work hands-on with a human patient simulator.

C.E. contact hours

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider number CEP 26, for 7.5 contact hours.

Attendees will not receive C.E. credit if they are more than 20 minutes late; no partial credit can be awarded.

Registration

UC Davis Health employees

$25 registration deposit. Registration deposit is returned upon completion of class. Cancellation must be requested five days prior to class date to receive deposit refund. Please register through UC Learning Center and call our office at 916-734-9790 with your deposit by credit card.

Registrations are approved only after your deposit is provided.

Community registrants

This class is only open to UC Davis Health employees.

Parking

Parking is available in parking structure 4, lots 12, 17, 22, 22 Auxiliary, 30, 30 Auxiliary, Broadway, EDD, and DOJ with either a B permit or daily permit.
