Biospecimen Informatics Core

The Biospecimen Informatics Core (BIC) supports biospecimen-based research across UC Davis by providing shared informatics infrastructure, consultation, and scalable specimen management systems.

We work with investigators to ensure that biospecimens and associated data are collected, managed, and stewarded according to best practices — enhancing scientific value while maintaining strong regulatory and ethical standards.

If you receive care at UC Davis, please understand that you may be approached for permission to use your specimens and medical information about your condition for research. You are always free to decline. If you are a tissue or blood donor, know that the UC Davis researchers are very grateful for your contributions.

    Universal Consent Registry

The Universal Consent Registry (UCR) allows UC Davis patients to voluntarily consent to the use of de-identified remnant clinical specimens and associated health information for research.
This institution-wide initiative expands access to ethically consented, well-annotated biospecimens while minimizing additional burden on patients and clinical teams.

  • Virtual Biospecimen Discovery

The Virtual Biospecimen Discovery tool facilitates collaboration by increasing visibility of institutionally held collections while respecting governance boundaries.

    Information Security & Data Stewardship

Responsible data stewardship is foundational to biospecimen research.
BIC maintains systems and processes that align with institutional and regulatory standards to safeguard patient confidentiality and ensure secure, role-based access to specimen data.
