UC Davis Health residents and clinical fellows have counseling services available through the Academic and Staff Assistance Program (ASAP). Two psychologists at ASAP, Uma Anand, Ph.D. and Sheetal Shah, Ph.D., provide services that are designed specifically to support the unique needs of individuals in training. ASAP also has additional clinicians available to ensure trainees receive timely access to services.

Counseling services can help identify and resolve problems whether the problem is work related, personal, career or relationship focused. Services include individual counseling, couples/family sessions, as well as sessions with spouse/partners alone. The services are confidential, no fee, no EPIC and sessions can be arranged in the evening hours. Sessions can assist with coping in various areas including:

  • Adjustment issues
  • Concerns about work performance
  • Coaching on communication and interpersonal skills
  • Family difficulties and tensions
  • Financial concerns
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Career decisions
  • How to address and prevent burnout

Referrals: The ASAP Psychologists can also assist residents and clinical fellows and their families locate resources through their medical insurance plan or self-pay providers.

Residents and Clinical Fellows have Anthem as their behavioral health provider. To find an in-network provider for Residents and Clinical Fellows, Anthem also offers the Live Health On Line information for additional telehealth services.

Medical Staff Wellness Survey

GME also offers an interactive confidential screening program. Take a moment to complete the brief, online questionnaire to find out how stress may be affecting you. After completing the questionnaire, one of our counselors will send you recommendations for further evaluation or follow-up. Again, this service is completely anonymous and confidential.

    Headspace Care (formerly Ginger) offers confidential mental healthcare through coaching via text-based chats, self-care resources, and video-based therapy and psychiatry for individuals 18 years and older.     Karima Holmes, M.D.

    Medical Director of Trainee Mental Health
    Associate Program Director of the General Psychiatry Residency Program

    Karima Holmes is a board-certified psychiatrist who is very passionate about supporting medical trainees' mental health and wellness. She will be leading the new Trainee Mental Health Clinic. She completed her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital, and a one-year fellowship at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute in Psychotherapy. Holmes earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Howard University College of Medicine after completing a post-baccalaureate pre-health program at Virginia Commonwealth University. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia, where she concentrated on Hinduism and Afro-Creole religious traditions.

    Holmes greatly enjoys talking and reading about anything related to liberation psychology and topics of Afrofuturism (Octavia Butler is her favorite author and she can listen to Earth Wind and Fire on repeat). Her other interests lie in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and addressing mental health concerns with cultural sensitivity. She is excited to join the UC Davis community.
