Clean Air Month: Therapy dogs, light rail field trip, bike repair, more
Sustainability team invites you to celebrate California Clean Air Month with fun events throughout month
California Clean Air Day is a state-wide day of action where Californians join together to help improve our air quality.
This year, the Sustainability team is extending the celebration throughout the month of October with a Bike Extravaganza, Puppy Picnic, and Light Rail Field Trip.
Bike Extravaganza
Get your bicycle tuned up for free at the Ride Ready Bicycle Tune-Up! Bicycle mechanics will be on site to perform basic repairs. Reservations are required. Space is limited.
Wednesday, Oct. 7
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Medical Education Building Breezeway (4601 X St, Sacramento, CA 95817)
Get a bike helmet when you complete the Helmet Hair Don’t Care pledge. The helmet must be for you, and a staff member will help you find the right fit. Helmets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
You can also register your bicycle, scooter, or skateboard. After you complete the online registration through Bike Index, Green Commuter staff will be on site to sell you a registration sticker for $10 (card payment only, no cash).
Even if riding on two wheels isn’t your thing, stop by this event to:
- Say hello to K9 Cali—UC Davis Police Department’s service dog who specializes in mental health.
- Enter a raffle for a reflective safety vest.
- Learn about all your commute options from the Green Commuter Program staff.
- Take the California Clean Air Day Pledge.
“Puppies, Not Pollution” Picnic
Pollution harms us. Nature heals us. Learn about ways to reduce pollution and enjoy time outdoors with therapy dogs from Lend a Heart Animal-Assisted Therapy.
Tuesday, Oct. 13
11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

You can also unwind at the art table by learning how to do Neurographics—a meditative art practice. No experience necessary!
Representatives from the Green Commuter Program, Transportation, Yolobus, and SMUD will share information on how to reduce pollution. You can even take a tour of the campus’s new electric shuttle.
Light Rail Field Trip
Familiarize yourself with Sacramento's light rail system by going on an organized field trip with the Green Commuter team.
Wednesday, Oct. 14
12-1 p.m.
Meet outside Cypress Building
Registration Required
The field trip is completely free to participants who register!
Participants will meet outside the Cypress Building and walk about 1/2 mile to the 39th Street Light Rail Station. The group will then take the Gold Line Light Rail up a few stops and back, returning to the 48th Street Station. The walk returning to campus is about ½ mile and will end at the Imaging Research Center.
How else can you participate?
UC Davis Health has taken the pledge and is encouraging you to do so too. Take the California Clean Air Day Pledge and take action to improve air quality in our community.
Get moving with small changes such as riding the bus, carpooling, walking or biking to your destination. Get green by composting your food or planting a tree at home or in a community garden. Or get clean by changing your air filter or eating vegetarian for the day.
Sustainability Officer Sarah Janus spearheads the Green Commuter Program, which highlights UC Davis Health’s sustainable transportation options.
“California Clean Air Day helps remind us that each one of us can take steps in our day-to-day lives that can have a positive impact on our regional air quality,” Janus said.
