Introducing 'Care Everywhere' Governing Councilmember Michael B. Marchant

(SACRAMENTO)

Michael B. Marchant, Director of System Integration & Health Information Exchange, Innovation Technology at UC Davis Health, was recently named to the Epic Care Everywhere Governing Council, effective October 13, 2022. Marchant joins a group of 15 voting members from across the nation who provide oversight for the Care Everywhere network. Candidates were selected by majority vote, and terms for members of the Governing Council last for three years.

Care Everywhere is a network of healthcare providers that share electronic health records. This allows patients to receive care at any Care Everywhere provider, regardless of location. Care Everywhere is part of the Epic healthcare software suite.

Focus groups feel the greatest impact of health information exchange (HIE) is the avoidance of duplicative diagnostic testing and the identification of drug-seeking behavior (Winden et al., 2014). A review of Emergency departments (ED) provider notes revealed that Care Everywhere (CE) use resulted in 560 duplicate diagnostic procedures being avoided and 28 cases of drug-seeking behavior identified (Winden et al., 2014). Nursing and ancillary staff feel like HIE positively impacts patient care (Winden et al., 2014).

Regarding patient care and the impact of Care Everywhere Marchant mentioned, "The biggest impact that Care Everywhere has is on patient care, improving quality by having access to the most up-to-date and timely information on a patient regardless of where they have had care. In turn, it reduces overall care costs due to improved quality and access."

As a member of the CE Governing Council, Marchant's goals include helping Epic navigate the 21st Century Cures exchange requirements, impacting Epic's involvement in industry HIE as a Qualified HIN (QHIN), and making improvements in future health information exchange.

(A QHIN is a network of organizations working together to share data.) As part of the Epic Executive Leadership Council, Marchant is excited about the opportunity to impact Epic development in this area moving forward.

The Care Everywhere network has a wide-reaching impact on the future of healthcare. By sharing electronic health records, patients can receive care at any Care Everywhere provider, regardless of location. As a Care Everywhere Governing Council member, Michael Marchant is excited about the opportunity to continue improving the Care Everywhere network and impacting the future of healthcare. When asked about the future of Care Everywhere he said, "Care Everywhere impacts the future of healthcare by creating a seamless data exchange fabric that provides access to patient information across the universe of care to allow clinicians to make clear decisions based on the most up-to-date information and as federal requirements make that a ‘must’ as opposed to an option – it will allow us to stay in line with our regulatory requirements as well."

UC Davis Health is proud of Marchant’s recent appointment to the Care Everywhere Governing Council and looks forward to seeing what he accomplishes in his new role.
