Patient volume in the hospital and emergency department

Dear Colleagues,
Our hospital, especially our emergency department (ED), continues to experience higher-than-normal patient volumes. This is not unique to UC Davis Health. Other hospitals are facing high volumes locally, regionally, and nationally. Other UCs have also taken steps to accommodate extremely high patient volumes and boarders in their EDs. Even in this context, our levels at our medical center remain exceptionally high.
We anticipate that these numbers will continue to rise in the near future, as we enter our historically busy season, when respiratory illnesses typically surge. We are seeing an aggressive flu season impact at hospitals in the Eastern US, and we expect this will move westward in the coming weeks. These challenging circumstances place a strain on our teams and patient care, and they can test the dedication and the compassion we show to our patients and to each other.
Teams across the hospital and emergency department are meeting regularly to monitor and assess this dynamic situation. They are developing plans and actions to reduce pressure on employees and ensure patients receive the high-quality care they need. Actions to manage these increased patient volumes may include some extraordinary steps and we are committed to keeping you informed and will share plans that are developed.
