POP Award recognizes team’s acts of heroism

Last week, Interim Chief Operating Officer Kimmie Bleichner-Jones and Director of Administrative Operations Kristine Seraspi presented Stacie Gonzalez, Jazmin Espinoza, and Carmen Wong, all from the Volunteer Services team, and Chaplain Samuel Brown-Dawson with a POP Award for their quick action, teamwork, and bravery in helping save a driver from a burning vehicle in front of their office.

Read the nomination and see how they truly made a difference in this person’s life:

“There was an accident on the corner in front of our office (Davis II). Stacie, Carmen and Jazmin ran outside to see what happened.

“A black truck had hit the pole right in front of our front door. Stacie ran over to the car to see if the driver was ok. She kept asking if he was ok, but he did not respond, he was unconscious (she thought he was dead!).

“Carmen ran back in to call 911. Right then the front of the truck caught on fire. Stacie then began to try get the guy out of the burning car, but the door was jammed and would not open. She tried both doors, using her feet and legs to try to get the door open.

“Jazmin ran back in and got our office fire extinguisher and brought it out. By then Samuel and a bystander were helping Stacie try to get the door open, they ended up breaking a window and were finally able to get the door open, which they did with the help of a fourth person who showed up.

“The man was removed from the car and placed on the ground nearby where he started to regain consciousness. Jazmin, Carmen, and another bystander extinguished the fire with the extinguisher!

“The ambulance showed up right then and took him away!”

Congratulations on the POP Award!
